E-commerce SEO Checklist: 30 Steps to Get More Conversions & Sales On Your Store

Most e-commerce SEO checklists are written for blogs, not stores. They rarely tackle product pages, category structures, faceted navigation, or stock changes — the technical problems that create real ranking issues, and exactly where stores lose visibility in Google and AI Overviews.

This checklist covers 30 items across five areas: product page optimisation, category and site architecture, technical SEO and indexability, site speed and mobile experience, and content and trust signals. It's for you if you want to know exactly where your store is leaking organic traffic — and what to fix first.

Product Page Optimisation

Product pages are a goldmine for rankings and conversions. Open any of your competitors' sites and you'll usually find generic, weak product description copy — that's easily your edge if you put in the effort. Here are the checkpoints that matter:

Unique, Keyword-Rich Product Titles

Every product title should describe what the item actually is, in the language customers search for — not an internal SKU or a vague brand name. Pull real search terms from Google Search Console or a keyword tool and work them into the title naturally: product type, brand, and a distinguishing attribute. Titles that read like catalogue codes rank for nothing.

Meta Descriptions That Earn Clicks

A meta description doesn't directly boost rankings, but it's your pitch in the search results. Write one per product mentioning the key benefit, a differentiator (free shipping, in stock, warranty), and a reason to click — within 150-160 characters. Templated descriptions that just repeat the title waste the opportunity.

Original Product Descriptions, Not Manufacturer Copy

Copy-pasting manufacturer descriptions across hundreds of products creates duplicate content at scale, and Google will only index one version of that text anywhere on the web. Write original descriptions that answer the questions a buyer actually has. This is the single highest-leverage content fix on most stores.

Product Schema Markup

Product schema tells Google your price, availability, and review data directly — the data that unlocks rich results in search. Every product page needs Product schema with accurate, up-to-date price and availability, because mismatched schema can trigger manual actions from Google.

Images, Alt Text, and Customer Reviews

Product images need descriptive alt text, not "IMG_4821.jpg", because Google Images and AI search increasingly surface product results visually. Genuine reviews and star ratings, marked up with Review schema, build the trust signals Google uses to judge page quality and double as long-tail keyword content written by your customers.

Category and Site Architecture

Category pages are just as important as product pages — get them right and you'll see it in your rankings. Whether you run an Amazon store or a Shopify store, this matters. Here's what to check:

Logical Category Hierarchy

Your category structure is the map for users and Google alike. Categories should move from broad to specific without becoming so deep that products sit five clicks from the homepage. A logical hierarchy distributes link authority evenly and makes it obvious what your store is about.

Faceted Navigation and Filter URL Control

Filters for size, colour, and price are essential for users but dangerous for SEO if every combination generates a new indexable URL. Thousands of near-duplicate filtered URLs waste crawl budget. Use canonical tags, robots directives, or parameter handling to control which filter combinations Google can index.

Breadcrumb Navigation

Breadcrumbs help users understand where they are and give Google a clear signal of your site's structure. Marked up with BreadcrumbList schema, they also appear directly in search results, replacing a raw URL with a readable path.

Internal Linking Between Related Products

"Related products" and "frequently bought together" sections aren't just conversion tools — they're internal links that help Google discover and understand relationships between products. Pages with no inbound internal links rarely get crawled regularly, regardless of content quality.

Pagination and Out-of-Stock Product Handling

Category pages with pagination need clear, crawlable links between pages, not infinite scroll that hides products from Googlebot. For out-of-stock products, don't delete pages with rankings or backlinks; show in-stock alternatives, or 301 redirect only if the product is permanently discontinued.

Technical SEO and Indexability

SEO for e-commerce stores demands special care with the technical fundamentals. Here's what matters most:

XML Sitemaps for Products and Categories

Your XML sitemap should include every product and category URL you want indexed, and exclude filtered, paginated, or parameter-based URLs. For large catalogues, split sitemaps by type so you can diagnose indexing issues at a glance.

Canonical Tags on Product Variants

A product available in five colours often generates five near-identical URLs. Canonical tags tell Google which version is the "main" one, consolidating ranking signals instead of splitting them across duplicates.

Robots.txt and Crawl Budget

Robots.txt should block Googlebot from low-value paths — cart, checkout, account, internal search — so crawl budget is spent on pages that can rank. On large stores, wasted crawl budget on irrelevant URLs is a direct reason new products take weeks to get indexed.

HTTPS and Security

Every page, including checkout, must run on HTTPS with a valid certificate and no mixed-content warnings. Beyond customer trust, HTTPS is a baseline ranking signal, and browsers actively warn users away from sites that fail this check.

Structured Data Validation and Duplicate Content Audits

Run your structured data through Google's Rich Results Test regularly — schema errors silently disable rich results without an obvious on-page warning. Separately, audit for duplicate content from URL parameters (sorting, tracking tags, session IDs) and consolidate with canonicals or parameter handling.

Site Speed and Mobile Experience

Slow, poorly structured stores lose buyers before they ever see a product. Make sure you're delivering the UX experience customers expect:

Core Web Vitals

LCP, INP, and CLS are ranking factors and direct predictors of conversion rate — a slow product page loses sales before a customer sees the price. Test category and product templates, not just the homepage, since these carry the most organic traffic.

Image Compression and Lazy Loading

Product images are usually the heaviest assets on an ecommerce page. Serve them in modern formats (WebP/AVIF), compress aggressively, and lazy-load anything below the fold so initial load isn't held up by images the user hasn't scrolled to.

Mobile-First Design

The majority of ecommerce traffic, and Google's indexing, is mobile-first. Test that product galleries, filters, and the add-to-cart button are fully usable on a small screen, not just visually present.

Reducing Render-Blocking Scripts and Styles

Apps, plugins, and tracking scripts accumulate over time and often load before the page's main content. Audit and defer or remove anything not essential to the initial render — every blocking script adds directly to the wait before a customer can interact with the page.

CDN Usage and Mobile Checkout

A CDN serves images and static assets from servers closer to the customer, which matters more for ecommerce because of image volume. On mobile, the checkout flow needs separate testing — form fields, payment buttons, and autofill should all work cleanly, since mobile checkout abandonment is where most ecommerce revenue is lost.

Content, Trust, and Conversion Signals

Get everything else right, but ship low-quality or AI-generated content and none of it holds up. You need genuinely useful e-commerce content. Here are the checkpoints that matter most:

Top-of-Funnel Content Hub

Buying guides, comparison posts, and "how to choose" articles capture customers before they have a specific product in mind, and build topical authority that lifts product and category pages too. A store with zero content beyond product pages is invisible for research-stage searches that eventually convert.

FAQ Content on Product and Category Pages

Shipping costs, returns policy, sizing, and compatibility are some of the highest-intent searches in ecommerce — and exactly what AI Overviews and featured snippets pull from. Answer them directly on the relevant product or category page, not buried in a separate help centre.

Trust Signals Near Checkout

Secure checkout badges, clear return policies, delivery timeframes, and contact information placed near the buy button reduce the hesitation that causes cart abandonment. These signals matter for conversion directly, and conversion increasingly feeds back into how Google treats a page's quality.

Internal Search Optimisation

A meaningful share of visitors use the on-site search bar instead of navigation, and a search returning "no results" for common misspellings or synonyms sends that customer to a competitor. Review search logs for zero-result queries and fix synonyms, redirects, or missing products.

Local SEO and Email Capture

If your store has a physical location or ships regionally, local SEO — Google Business Profile, location pages, local schema — captures "near me" searches a generic listing misses. Email capture, via a genuinely useful incentive rather than a generic popup, turns one-time organic visitors into a channel you control directly.
