SEO Blog Post Checklist That Tells You Whether Your Content Is Ready To Publish Or Not

Most blog posts fail before they're even published. Not because the writing is weak, but because the groundwork was skipped. Wrong keyword, no internal links, a meta description nobody wrote, and images that triple the page weight. All of this hurts on-page and technical SEO, and despite high-quality content, you don't get the intended results.

This checklist covers 27 items across three stages:

  • Keyword research and search intent
  • On-page content structure
  • Pre-publish technical and promotion checks

Each element is briefly explained below if you're totally new to SEO. If you're an experienced SEO, jump straight to the checkboxes — it'll take you around 10 minutes either way.

Keyword Research & Search Intent

Almost always, high-performing blog posts are based on solid keyword research and strategy — random content never brings results. Make sure yours is grounded in proper keyword research and thoroughly satisfies search intent before you write a word.

Picking a Primary Keyword With Real Intent

Before a single sentence gets written, confirm the primary keyword and check what Google currently rewards for it — guides, listicles, product pages, or comparisons. Writing a 2,000-word guide for a keyword where the top results are short product pages is wasted effort, no matter how good the writing is.

Studying the Current SERP Before You Write

Pull up the top 10 results and read them properly. Note the angle each one takes, what they cover, and where they're thin or outdated. Your post needs a reason to exist beyond "another article on this topic" — and that reason should be obvious from the first paragraph.

Benchmarking Length and Depth Against Competitors

Word count isn't a ranking factor on its own, but it's a useful proxy for depth. Check what length the top-ranking posts land at and treat it as a floor, not a target — match their coverage, then add the one or two things they missed.

Mapping Secondary and Related Keywords

List the related terms, questions, and synonyms that should appear naturally across the post. This will ensure the post actually answers the cluster of questions someone with this query has, not just the literal search term.

Setting Title Tag and URL Foundations Early

Draft the title tag and URL slug before you write the body, not after. The title tag should include the primary keyword near the front and give a clear reason to click, and the slug should be short, lowercase, and hyphenated.

Content Structure & On-Page Optimisation

Content structure matters hugely from a UX, SEO, and AI search visibility perspective. If your content writing is top-notch but the page is a wall of text, you'll still lose visibility. Here are the elements that need attention.

Structuring Headings So Google and Readers Follow

The H1 should match the intent set by the title tag, and every H2 and H3 underneath it should follow a logical order — not just a list of subheadings bolted on for SEO. A reader skimming only the headings should be able to follow the post's argument from top to bottom.

Writing an Intro That Earns the Scroll

The first 100 words need to do two jobs: tell the reader they're in the right place, and work the primary keyword in naturally. Skip the throat-clearing — state the problem, hint at the answer, and get into the content. If the intro could be cut without losing meaning, cut it.

Linking Internally and Externally With Purpose

Internal links to relevant pages on your site help Google understand how the post fits into your wider content, and help readers find related resources without leaving. External links to authoritative sources back up specific claims and signal that the post is well-researched.

Formatting for Scanability, Not Just Readability

Short paragraphs, bullet points where they genuinely help, and bolded key phrases all make a post easier to scan on mobile — which is how most readers will arrive. A post that's technically well-written but formatted as a wall of text will still see high bounce rates.

Writing Meta Descriptions and Snippet-Ready Answers

The meta description won't directly affect rankings, but it does affect click-through from the results page — write one that's specific, not generic. If the post answers a clear question, include a tight, direct answer early in the relevant section to give Google something to pull into a featured snippet.

Pre-Publish Technical, Media & Promotion Checks

Once you're done writing and finalising the piece, it's time for some final checks before you hit publish. This is really important from a strong technical SEO perspective.

Optimising Images Before They Slow the Page Down

Every image should be compressed and sized appropriately before upload — large, unoptimised images are one of the most common causes of slow blog pages. Alt text should accurately describe the image for accessibility and provide Google with additional context, rather than simply repeating the target keyword.

Adding Schema Markup for Richer Search Results

The Article or BlogPosting schema helps Google understand the post's structure, author, and publish date, and can support richer results in search. It's a small addition that's easy to template once and forget about — but easy to skip entirely if it's not part of the pre-publish routine.

Checking Mobile Rendering and Broken Links

Preview the post on mobile before publishing — formatting issues, oversized images, and awkward line breaks are far more visible on a phone than in the desktop editor. At the same time, run a quick check for broken internal or external links, especially if the post reuses content blocks from elsewhere.

Tidying Taxonomy and Social Previews

Assign the post to the right categories and tags so it sits correctly in your site's structure — this affects both navigation and how topically related content gets grouped. Then check how the post's social preview card renders; a missing or wrong image here undermines every share the post gets.

Final Proofread and Promotion Plan

A last proofread for grammar, clarity, and factual accuracy catches the errors that slip through during writing — read it once as if you were the reader, not the author.

Finally, have a plan for where this post gets shared once it's live; a great post with no distribution plan rarely gets the early traffic that helps it rank.
